What is anaerobic training?

Anaerobic training is characterized by exercise that is primarily strength training related. When a person strength trains, the muscle utilizes stored sugar to supply energy for quick bursts of force; such as doing repetitions of a bicep curl. Since the intensity is greater and only for a short period of time as opposed to cardiovascular training (riding a bike, walking) the body utilizes the quickest form of the most appropriate energy source which is sugar. When a person trains “anaerobically”, the muscle would experience a burning sensation in the trained muscle that eventually would build up to a point that the exerciser would have to stop. This is due to the absence of oxygen in the muscle and the build up of lactic acid as a result of sugar being used as the energy source.

Should I do my cardio work before or after I weight train?

WHAT PEOPLE SAY:  Cardio work should be done after your weight training
workout. After you weight training workout your body has already used
stored carbohydrates and sugar (glycogen) from its own muscles as an
energy source. After this takes place your main energy source will be fat
which is burned off during a cardio workout.

Should I strength train?

Yes. Strength training has many benefits that everyone can reap. Strength training helps to gives the body a conditioned, “in shape” look, prevents degenerative conditions in the skeletal system later in life, speeds up the metabolism to increase your caloric burning capability and helps to correct muscular imbalances that may cause pain and discomfort due to pressure and stress on the spine.

Should a woman lift weights?

Women should weight train for many reasons; to improve muscle tone, strength, and overall health. A weight training program will build muscle and condition areas that are “problem areas”. An aerobics component will help to reduce the storage of fat in those “problem areas” and combined with a weight training component, will give the body a sleeker more slender appearance. Weight training, cardiovascular work and a sensible diet married to your fitness goals is a dynamite prescription for achieving the results you desire.

If I feel pain, should I continue exercising?

Is the pain in the muscle or in the joint? If the pain is in the muscle, you are experiencing the build up of lactic acid that is causing the muscle to “burn” and begin to feel as if the muscle is filling up with air. This is a normal occurrence when you are weight training. If you are feeling pain in the joint, then you may be stressing ligaments or tendons that support the joint or you may be performing an exercise incorrectly and the weight is stressing a joint that is part of your working muscle groups. This is not recommended. If you feel pain in a joint at any time in your exercise, first try limiting the range of motion. If the pain is still continuing, terminate your exercise and consult the proper health care professional to be certain that you have not injured yourself or have aggravated a developing condition.
